Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Review: The Lightest Pro Telephoto Zoom of Its Generation

A 70-200mm f/2.8 is the second lens most working photographers buy. Weddings, sports, events, portraits, concerts. It’s the lens for the moments you can’t get close to. Sony’s first G Master version was excellent and heavy. The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II, announced in October 2021 at about $2,800, cut the weight to roughly 1,045 grams without the tripod foot, about 30 percent lighter than the original.

At launch it was the lightest 70-200mm f/2.8 on the market. On a ten-hour wedding day, you feel that difference by the first dance.

It also zooms internally, so the lens stays the same length from 70mm to 200mm and balances the same throughout.

Faster and sharper

Four XD linear motors drive focus. Sony says autofocus is up to four times faster than the first version, and in practice it keeps up with the A1 II and A9 III at their fastest burst rates. Tracking is quiet and smooth for video too.

Sharpness is excellent across the frame from f/2.8 at every focal length. It handles high-resolution bodies like the A7R V without breaking a sweat. Eleven rounded aperture blades give soft, round backgrounds.

Close focus improved to 0.4 meters at 70mm, for 0.3x magnification. Useful for rings, flowers and details at events.

Handling

There’s optical stabilization with three modes, including one for panning. An aperture ring with a de-click switch for video. AF/MF and full-time manual focus switches, a focus limiter and three customizable focus-hold buttons. The lens is weather sealed with a fluorine-coated front element.

It works with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, giving a 280mm f/4 or a 400mm f/5.6. That makes it a flexible light wildlife lens too.

The downsides

Price. About $2,800 is a lot, and Sigma and Tamron make cheaper 70-180mm and 70-200mm alternatives.

It’s still over a kilogram. Lighter than the original, but not light.

Who should buy it

Wedding and event photographers on Sony. Sports and concert shooters. Portrait photographers who love telephoto compression. Hybrid shooters who need a fast, quiet zoom for interviews and live events.

If budget matters, Tamron’s 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 is a much lighter, cheaper alternative with a little less reach. If you need the best 70-200mm on Sony, this is still it.
