Sony A7R V Review: 61 Megapixels With AI Autofocus That Finally Keeps Up
Sony’s A7R line has always been about resolution. The Sony A7R V, launched in October 2022 at $3,899 for the body, kept the 61MP back-side illuminated sensor from the A7R IV and spent its upgrades on everything around it. The biggest one was a dedicated AI processing unit for autofocus, a first for Sony.
That chip is why the A7R V mattered. A 61MP camera is unforgiving: a slightly missed eye that looks fine at 24MP looks soft at 61. Better focus means more usable frames at full resolution.
It’s been joined by the A7R VI in 2026, but the A7R V remains one of the best high-resolution cameras you can buy, especially used or discounted.

Resolution you can actually use
The AI autofocus recognizes the shape and pose of a human body, so it keeps tracking when someone turns away. It also detects animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and planes. For portraits, weddings and even casual wildlife, hit rates at 61MP are far better than on the A7R IV.
Stabilization is rated at 8 stops, which helps a lot at this resolution.
The viewfinder is superb: a 9.44-million-dot OLED, one of the sharpest you can look through. For checking focus and detail in the field, it’s a joy.
There’s a 16-shot pixel-shift mode that combines frames into a 240MP image of still subjects, and focus bracketing for macro and product work.
The screen nobody else had
The A7R V introduced a rear screen that both tilts up and down like a photographer’s camera and flips out to the side like a vlogger’s camera. It’s a 3.2-inch panel. Sony later used the same design on other bodies, including the A7 V. Once you’ve used it, simple flip screens feel limiting.
Where it holds back
Speed. Bursts top out at 10 fps with compressed raw, and fall to about 7 fps in higher-quality raw. It’s not built for sports.
Video is good rather than great. 8K at up to 25p with a 1.24x crop. 4K at 60p, also cropped. Full-width 4K at up to 30p. 10-bit, S-Log3 and S-Cinetone. Rolling shutter is noticeable, and 8K has heat limits. Video specialists should look elsewhere.
61MP files are big. You’ll need fast cards, a strong computer and lots of storage. Dual slots take CFexpress Type A or SD UHS-II.
Who should buy it
Landscape, architecture, studio, product and portrait photographers. Anyone who prints large or crops heavily. Wedding shooters who want maximum resolution for detail shots and enough autofocus smarts for the rest of the day.
Compared with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, the Sony has more resolution and the better viewfinder, while the Canon is much faster and better for video. Compared with the Nikon Z8, similar story.
If resolution is what you need, the A7R V still delivers it with fewer compromises than almost anything else.
